Manchester United eyeing move for a player Erik ten Hag sold

Attention has turned to a familiar name.

Erik ten Hag, Ruben Amorim

Manchester United are looking to add new names to the midfield ahead of the January transfer window. The situation in the middle of the park has become increasingly complicated.

Ruben Amorim is short of quality and depth in midfield. Casemiro is also expected to leave at the end of the season.

At the same time, the futures of Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte remain unclear.

United’s problems have become worse because of injuries. Both Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes have spent time on the sidelines. That has left Amorim with limited options to choose from.

Because of that, United had to improvise recently. They had to use Lisandro Martinez in midfield during the recent 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa. That decision highlighted the lack of natural options available.

United have monitored several midfielders in the summer. Among their targets were Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, and Angelo Stiller. However, they failed to sign a midfielder in the summer.

Now, attention has turned to a familiar name. According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are considering a move for James Garner.

The midfielder left Manchester United three years ago. He joined Everton for around £9 million. At the time, the decision was made under Erik ten Hag.

Garner is now being viewed as an affordable option. His contract will expire in the summer. That could make a January deal possible.

The 24-year-old joined United’s academy as an Under-8 player in 2009. He made his first-team debut in 2018. Also, he managed just seven senior appearances before moving to Everton in 2022.

Since then, Garner has featured 103 times for Everton and scored three goals. He also impressed last month when he played the full 90 minutes against his former club in a 1-0 win.

Everton are hopeful of tying him down to a new deal. They want to do that before the January window opens.

So, the Red Devils will be looking act fast if they are looking to sign their former academy graduate.
