Some careers take turns that nobody sees coming.

And for a legendary striker, the destination being explored might surprise a few people.

Romelu Lukaku open to shock Premier League return

According to TEAMtalk, Lukaku is actively considering a return to England this summer, with Napoli ready to part ways with the 32-year-old striker and willing to accept a fee of around £20 million to make it happen.

Lukaku has endured a deeply frustrating campaign in Italy.

Making just seven appearances the former Manchester United attacker has played a little over an hour of football in total, due to a series of hamstring and muscular injuries.

His contract has just over 12 months remaining, which gives Napoli every reason to cash in now rather than risk losing him for nothing.

The Italian market has been explored first.

However, England is now firmly in the picture.

Intermediaries are actively contacting Premier League clubs to gauge interest, with Lukaku himself open to returning to a league he knows better than almost any other.

His last stint came at Chelsea in 2022, a return that didn’t go to plan.

At £20 million, he represents the kind of low-risk, high-reward proposition that certain clubs in this division are well placed to explore.

A side looking for an experienced striker to complement a younger attack?

Or a mid-table side wanting a name that can change a game off the bench.

Much will depend on his fitness record and the financial structure of any deal.

But Lukaku’s motivation to prove himself isn’t in doubt.

A player of his stature doesn’t accept a season of seven appearances and walk away quietly.

He’ll be looking for a club that gives him a platform.

And right now, England looks like the most likely place to find one.
