Manchester United have already strengthened their midfield considerably during the summer transfer window, but further additions remain possible.
Michael Carrick’s squad has welcomed Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, giving the manager new options ahead of the upcoming campaign.
However, United continue to consider another midfielder as they look to improve the depth and balance of their squad.
Carlos Baleba has remained on their radar after attracting considerable attention from the Old Trafford recruitment team over the past year.
United previously encountered a major financial obstacle when exploring a deal, with Brighton demanding around £100 million for their highly-rated midfielder.
That valuation made completing the transfer extremely difficult, and United ultimately focused their resources elsewhere in the market.
However, the financial picture surrounding a potential deal has now changed considerably and could encourage United to reconsider their position.
According to Craig Hope, Brighton could now listen to offers of around £60 million to £65 million for Carlos Baleba.
That represents a substantial reduction of approximately £35 million to £40 million from the previous £100 million valuation.
United have tracked the 22-year-old for more than a year and previously held talks regarding a potential move to Old Trafford.
They also reached a broad agreement over personal terms with the Cameroon international during their earlier pursuit.
Nevertheless, United could face fresh competition if they decide to return for Baleba before the transfer deadline.
Newcastle United have entered the race as they attempt to rebuild their midfield following the departures of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.
There is also uncertainty surrounding Baleba’s immediate availability after he suffered an ankle ligament injury during pre-season.
Despite that setback, speculation around his future has continued as Brighton appear increasingly willing to negotiate over a potential departure.
United therefore know the financial requirements should they revive their interest, although no fresh formal bid has yet been mentioned.
