Manchester United have started the 2026–27 season under pressure following a difficult opening Premier League result. Michael Carrick’s side suffered a 2–0 defeat against newly promoted Hull City.
United had already endured an inconsistent pre-season, with defeats against Wrexham and AC Milan among their results.
However, they also recorded victories over Rosenborg and Atletico Madrid during their summer preparations.
The club has since moved aggressively in the transfer market to strengthen several areas of Carrick’s squad.
United finalised a £70 million agreement for Carlos Baleba after previously signing Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
However, the Red Devils are also searching for a new left-back before the summer transfer window closes.
Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde has emerged as one of their options, with uncertainty surrounding his future at Camp Nou.
According to ESPN, Manchester United prefer signing Alejandro Balde on loan with an option to buy instead of completing a permanent transfer.
However, that approach does not match Barcelona’s preference because the Catalan club would rather sell Balde permanently.
Barcelona are prepared to allow the 22-year-old to leave if they receive a substantial transfer fee this summer.
The Spanish club could then use the money to sign a left-footed centre-back or further strengthen their attack.
Meanwhile, Balde trained normally with his Barcelona teammates despite missing their recent match against Elche.
His absence from that fixture has increased uncertainty around his position during the closing stages of the window.
Jorge Mendes is now in direct contact with both clubs as discussions continue over Balde’s possible departure.
Furthermore, Joao Cancelo’s arrival and Xavi Espart’s starting position against Elche have reduced Balde’s opportunities at left-back.
United must therefore decide whether to adjust their preferred loan structure if Barcelona continue insisting on a permanent sale.
