Manchester United are continuing their squad rebuild after a disappointing campaign. Michael Carrick has already moved to strengthen the midfield with a deal for Atalanta star Ederson.
The Red Devils are also pushing to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes as they prepare for a return to Champions League football. However, arrivals are only part of the plan.
United also need to reduce the size of the squad and free up space for new signings.
Several high earners have already left Old Trafford, while more departures could follow before the transfer window closes. The club has already cut a significant amount from its wage bill.
Casemiro, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia have departed, while Marcus Rashford could also leave if the right offer arrives.
Those exits would give United greater flexibility in the market. Now another midfielder faces an uncertain future.
According to The Sun, Manchester United are prepared to accept a loss in order to sell Manuel Ugarte this summer.
The Uruguay international joined the club in 2024 for an initial fee of £42.3 million, with the deal potentially rising to £50.75 million through add-ons.
However, Ugarte struggled to establish himself at Old Trafford and started only ten matches last season.
The report claims United would need around £25.38 million to avoid making a loss under Premier League profitability and sustainability rules.
Even so, the club believes previous player sales leave them in a position where they can absorb a lower fee if necessary. Ugarte is currently away with Uruguay at the World Cup.
However, United are not actively pushing him out of the door. Club officials reportedly do not want to damage his market value by openly placing him on the transfer list.
Nevertheless, United remain open to a sale. If Ugarte leaves, Carrick could look to add two more midfielders alongside Ederson.
