Manchester United set sight on Premier League striker

Manchester United will have a difficult task.

Ruben Amorim

Manchester United invested heavily in their attack last summer. They signed Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko to reshape their attack.

Mbeumo and Cunha have already made a difference in United’s attack this season. However, there is still a question about Sesko.

The Slovenian is yet to hit the ground running. The 22-year-old signed for United from RB Leipzig for a fee of around €85 million.

However, so far, he has scored only two goals. Also, Joshua Zirkzee has failed to impress Ruben Amorim with his output.

That is why the Manchester United manager is asking for an experienced striker. Also, with Roma wanting Zirkzee and the Dutch international willing to leave, they need to find a replacement.

Now, the Portuguese boss is looking for a striker from the Premier League. He knows that he doesn’t have much time left on his hands.

After the draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers, fans are not happy. So, he needs to find a striker who has proven that he can deliver goals in the Premier League.

That is why Amorim is eyeing a move for a 28-year-old striker who has helped his team lift a major trophy last season.

According to Football Insider, Manchester United are now looking to sign Jean-Philippe Mateta from Crystal Palace.

So far this season, Mateta has scored nine goals, which is way more than Benjamin Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee combined.

In the 2023-24 season, Mateta scored 19 goals in all competitions. And, in the last season, he scored 17 goals and helped Palace win the FA Cup.

His contract with Palace ends in 2027, and he has stopped talks over a new deal. However, after letting Eberechi Eze leave for Arsenal, Palace will be reluctant to let Mateta leave in January.

So, it seems Manchester United will have a difficult task in convincing Palace to sell Mateta this month.
