Manchester United have completely transformed their midfield under Michael Carrick after spending around £155 million this summer.
The Red Devils signed Carlos Baleba from Brighton for £70 million after previously adding Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
United paid £48 million for Santos and £35 million for Tielemans as Carrick rebuilt an area weakened by departures and injuries.
However, their opening Premier League game showed that Carrick could still strengthen another area before the transfer window closes.
United suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat against newly-promoted Hull City, with their problems at left-back becoming particularly evident.
As a result, Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall emerged as their primary long-term target to provide competition for Luke Shaw.
The 21-year-old is keen on moving to Old Trafford, but Newcastle have made their position regarding a summer departure clear.
Therefore, United have paused their pursuit and could return for Hall next summer rather than pushing for an immediate transfer.
Meanwhile, they have considered Alejandro Balde, Jorge Salinas and David Raum as possible alternatives before the deadline.
According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United have also set their sights on Brighton left-back Ferdi Kadioglu following their successful move for Baleba.
United and Fenerbahce have both made formal enquiries regarding Kadioglu’s availability, with Brighton valuing him at around £40 million.
However, there is currently no agreement between Manchester United and Brighton despite claims that a transfer was close to completion.
United appear more likely to move for Racing Santander’s Salinas, who has a €16 million exit clause in his contract.
They have also held talks over Barcelona’s Balde, although the defender wants to remain at Camp Nou.
Therefore, United could pursue a cheaper option before potentially returning for Hall during next summer’s transfer window.
Their remaining business could also depend on departures, with Joshua Zirkzee currently in advanced talks over a loan move to Fiorentina.
