Manchester United have made rebuilding their midfield a priority after securing a return to the Champions League under Michael Carrick.
The Red Devils have already strengthened the department with the arrival of Ederson from Atalanta. But the club still want another central midfielder before the transfer window closes.
Mateus Fernandes has remained high on United’s shortlist throughout the summer. However, negotiations with West Ham United have become increasingly difficult.
Despite Fernandes reportedly preferring a move to Old Trafford over Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United have become reluctant to match West Ham’s demands.
That stance has forced the Red Devils to accelerate work on alternative targets.
According to The i Paper, Manchester United could now walk away from a deal for Mateus Fernandes after turning their attention towards Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott.
The report claims West Ham are demanding at least £80 million before opening serious negotiations for Fernandes.
Manchester United believe that valuation is excessive and are unwilling to meet the asking price. Instead, Alex Scott has emerged as the club’s preferred alternative.
United believe a deal for the Bournemouth midfielder could be completed for less than the fee West Ham are demanding, making him a more realistic target this summer.
Securing Scott will not be straightforward either. Bournemouth have no intention of selling the 22-year-old and remain determined to keep him at the club beyond this summer.
Marco Rose also wants the midfielder to stay as part of his long-term plans. Even so, United remain optimistic that negotiations could become possible if the right offer arrives.
The club believes Bournemouth may eventually soften their stance for a fee below West Ham’s valuation of Fernandes.
For now, Fernandes remains an option, but United appear increasingly prepared to end their pursuit if West Ham refuse to lower their demands.
