Manchester United set to battle with rivals Manchester City for French superstar

Manchester United are set to battle with their rivals Manchester City over a French superstar.

Manchester United had been tracking him for weeks.

His World Cup performances made him impossible to ignore.

And then Manchester City entered the room.

The same room.

For the same player.

And suddenly United’s pursuit has a major new complication.

Manchester City enter race for Manu Kone as Manchester United face shock hijack for France World Cup star

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester City have identified Manu Kone of Roma as a potential signing for their revamped midfield, entering the race for the 25-year-old France international who has already been on Manchester United’s shortlist throughout the summer window.

Both clubs now want the same player.

Both clubs are shopping in the same £51 million bracket.

And Roma, who had been growing frustrated at the lack of concrete movement, have a very different negotiating situation on their hands.

City’s interest makes complete sense the moment you understand the scale of their midfield transformation this summer.

Rodri has gone to Barcelona.

Tijjani Reijnders has departed for Al-Qadsiah.

Bernardo Silva left for Real Madrid.

Elliot Anderson has arrived.

But a second midfielder, someone who covers ground, wins duels and provides the defensive base the system demands, has always been part of Enzo Maresca’s plan.

Kone is that player.

Physically strong.

Excellent off the ball.

And capable of playing as a six or an eight.

His World Cup for France, caused Roma to raise their asking price from €50 million to approximately €60 million.

That increase was enough to cool Manchester United’s enthusiasm.

Inter Milan had also circled before stepping back.

And then City arrived, with deeper pockets and a more urgent structural need.

Manchester City remain hopeful of signing Bouaddi from Lille and retain interest in Enzo Fernandez, but Chelsea’s £120 million valuation has proven an insurmountable barrier.

Kone at £51 million represents far better value.

And with Rodri’s departure having created a void that Anderson and Bouaddi alone cannot fill, the logic behind a Kone signing is clear.

For Manchester United, the situation is uncomfortable.

They must now either accelerate significantly, or watch their cross-city rivals take another player they wanted.
