Manchester United star asks to leave in January

The Red Devils will not stand in his way.

Ruben Amorim

Manchester United are finally showing signs of progress under Ruben Amorim. The win against Liverpool at Anfield was a landmark result under the Portuguese boss.

It was the first at Anfield for United since 2016. And it was also the first time Manchester United had won back-to-back games under Ruben Amorim.

Now, they are gearing up to face Brighton, an opponent that has haunted the Red Devils at Old Trafford for the last few years.

However, not every player is happy with what is transpiring at United. Kobbie Mainoo wants to leave because of the lack of game time. The Red Devils have identified a replacement for Mainoo too.

The case is similar for another Manchester United star. Joshua Zirkzee wants to leave the club as well. He is struggling to find game time to make his case for the upcoming World Cup in 2026.

Zirkzee joined from Bologna in 2024 for a fee close to £36.5 million after an impressive spell in Serie A. Erik ten Hag was eager to sign him. Last season, he managed only seven goals in 49 appearances.

This campaign, he has played just 82 minutes across four matches, which clearly shows where he stands in Ruben Amorim’s plans.

Manchester United are already out of the EFL Cup and not competing in Europe. So the opportunities have been rare for players like Zirkzee.

Also, the manager has preferred Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha as his main attacking options. According to The Mirror, the 24-year-old has now told the club that he wants to leave in January.

Reports claim that the Red Devils will not stand in his way. Amorim has already decided that he does not see the Dutch striker as part of his long-term project.

Furthermore, the interest in him is already growing. Several clubs are preparing offers, with Premier League side West Ham United seen as the leading contender to sign him.

Italian teams Roma and Como want to bring him back to Serie A, while Real Betis in Spain are exploring a possible loan move.

For Joshua Zirkzee, leaving Old Trafford may now be the only way to restart his career and get a place in the Dutch national team.
