Manchester United suffer transfer blow in pursuit of Premier League striker

Manchester United have suffered another setback this summer.

Manchester United continue to reshape their squad after an impressive 2025/26 campaign under Michael Carrick.

The Red Devils finished third in the Premier League and secured a return to the Champions League.

Carrick has already received strong backing this summer. United signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa to strengthen midfield.

Karl Darlow also arrived on a free transfer, while Rasmus Hojlund completed a permanent move to Napoli. United have carried positive momentum into pre-season.

They responded to defeat against Wrexham by thrashing Rosenborg 5-0. Bryan Mbeumo then scored twice in a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid.

However, Carrick still wants more attacking depth. Joshua Zirkzee could leave before the window closes, leaving United to assess possible additions behind Benjamin Sesko.

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United have shown interest in signing Igor Thiago, but Brentford have no intention of selling the Brazilian striker this summer.

The report states that Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have also registered interest through intermediaries. Bayern Munich are monitoring him as well.

Thiago enjoyed an outstanding 2025/26 season with Brentford. The 25-year-old scored 22 goals during his first full campaign in English football after injuries disrupted his previous season.

His performances also earned him a place in Brazil’s World Cup squad. Brentford then rewarded the striker with a new long-term contract.

The Bees now view Thiago as one of the key players in their project under Keith Andrews. They have made it clear that they will not entertain offers during the current window.

United have suffered another setback because the player shares Brentford’s stance. Thiago is happy in west London and has no desire to force a transfer.

That leaves Carrick and United’s recruitment team looking elsewhere if they decide to add another centre-forward.

For now, Brentford remain confident of keeping Thiago despite growing interest from several major European clubs.
