Carrick is understood to be pushing strongly for the midfielder and has the backing of INEOS as discussions around a possible move continue internally.
Manchester United are reportedly prepared to test Newcastle’s resolve with an opening proposal worth between £70M and £80M.
However, completing any agreement will remain extremely difficult. Newcastle have no desire to sell Tonali and reportedly value the midfielder at more than £100M.
The Magpies are also under far less financial pressure following the departures of Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.
However, United’s interest is genuine, and the club are now positioning themselves aggressively in one of the summer’s biggest midfield battles.
