Some transfer battles are won.
Others never really begin.
Manchester United appeared interested.
Real Madrid look set to get their man.
And are already planning for the future.
Thus, one of the most highly-rated young midfielders in Europe could be next.
Mateus Fernandes has attracted attention from several top clubs in recent months.
But the Spanish giants appear to be leading the race.
Matheus Fernandes set to pick Real Madrid over Manchester United in surprise decision
According to London Evening Standard, Real Madrid are increasingly confident of reaching an agreement for the Portuguese midfielder despite interest from a number of Premier League sides.
Specifically, that includes Manchester United.
The Red Devils have monitored Fernandes closely.
His performances have not gone unnoticed.
Yet, there was a belief that he could become part of the club’s midfield rebuild.
However, Real Madrid have moved quickly.
And history suggests that when Los Blancos identify a priority target, they rarely hang around.
Discussions have advanced significantly, with the player increasingly expected to continue his development in the Spanish capital.
For Manchester United, that would represent a frustrating setback.
Fernandes is regarded as one of the most promising midfielders of his generation.
The 21-year-old has yet already displayed the maturity and composure of a far more experienced player.
His rise has been rapid.
And his profile perfectly matches the type of player Europe’s elite clubs are searching for.
Technically gifted.
Comfortable under pressure.
And capable of influencing games in multiple phases.
Therefore, those qualities have reportedly convinced Real Madrid that he can become a long-term fixture in their midfield.
For United, attention may now need to turn elsewhere.
The club have been linked with several midfield options this summer as they continue reshaping the squad ahead of next season.
But missing out on Fernandes would still sting.
Especially given the level of interest surrounding him.
The midfielder has also been linked with Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain in recent months.
Yet Real Madrid appear to have moved into pole position.
A move to Real Madrid would offer Fernandes the chance to compete for the biggest trophies in football.
And for a player of his potential, that opportunity may simply be impossible to ignore.
Manchester United were interested.
But Real Madrid look set to win this race.
And Mateus Fernandes could soon be the latest young star to swap England for the Bernabeu.
