Manchester United have been scanning the market for a forward. They want someone experienced but also affordable.
The club has looked at different profiles in recent weeks, with Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo one of the names often discussed.
The 25-year-old has had a strong spell in the Premier League. His movement, sharp left foot, and ability to press from the front caught attention.
He fits the style Ruben Amorim wants. But he does not come cheap. Brentford are not under pressure to sell as they are demanding more than £62.5 million.
For a club like United, who also need to make sales, that is a big ask, especially in a summer where they already spent on Matheus Cunha.
So, fans started speculating about cheaper alternatives. That is when links began to surface around a different player, someone with Premier League experience and a free agent this time.
His contract expired at the end of June. He has scored over 70 goals in English football.
He is strong in the air, smart with his hold-up play, and at 28, still has years left. On paper, the move made sense. At least that was the belief.
But according to Ben Jacobs (via The United Stand), Dominic Calvert-Lewin is not expected to move to Old Trafford.
Not now. His wage demands are seen as too high. Unless those numbers drop, United will not go ahead with the deal.
The striker has also been linked to Fulham, Sunderland, and even Leeds United. A move is still possible later in the window.
But for now, Manchester United are walking away. The club will continue searching for the right option, one that fits both the system and the budget.
