Martin Zubimendi sets condition for Arsenal exit amid Chelsea and Real Madrid links

Both Chelsea and Real Madrid have maintained contact over his situation and remain interested.

Martin Zubimendi is ready to consider his Arsenal future in January if his situation does not improve before the transfer window opens.

The Spain international has lost his regular starting position under Mikel Arteta after playing an important role during Arsenal’s title-winning 2025/26 campaign.

Zubimendi lost his place to Myles Lewis-Skelly towards the end of last season. That selection pattern has continued during the opening weeks of the new campaign.

Bruno Guimaraes’ summer arrival has also increased competition for places in Arsenal’s midfield.

Despite his reduced minutes, Martin Zubimendi currently intends to fight for his position rather than seek an immediate departure.

According to TEAMtalk, the 27-year-old would push for a January exit if he has not regained regular first-team football by then.

Zubimendi has already spoken directly with Arteta about his situation. The Arsenal manager remains an admirer and has reassured him that he will receive playing opportunities this season.

However, the amount and importance of those minutes will influence Zubimendi’s decision when his future is reviewed before January.

Chelsea and Real Madrid both explored his situation during the summer. The clubs made enquiries and held talks with the midfielder’s camp.

Arsenal resisted those approaches because they wanted to retain Zubimendi as part of their squad.

Both Chelsea and Real Madrid have maintained contact over his situation and remain interested. TEAMtalk reports that up to six clubs made contact regarding Zubimendi during the summer.

There has also been contact from the Saudi Pro League, although Zubimendi currently has no interest in moving to the Middle East.

His immediate priority remains earning regular first-team football at Arsenal and establishing himself again under Arteta. However, that is also the key condition surrounding his future.

If Zubimendi remains short of regular minutes when January arrives, his camp could pursue an exit, potentially reopening the door for Chelsea and Real Madrid.
