Some players spend years fighting injury setbacks before finally finding consistent form.
And just as they do, their club faces a decision about whether to keep them or cash in.
Mason Mount has had one of those careers since arriving at Old Trafford.
AC Milan have come calling.
And Manchester United have given their answer.
Manchester United and AC Milan talks stall for Mason Mount
According to the Daily Mail, United have made clear that Mount is not for sale this summer, rejecting an approach from Milan worth £21.5 million and confirming that the 27-year-old remains very much part of Michael Carrick’s plans for the season ahead.
The interest from Italy had been building quietly.
Milan are searching for creative midfield reinforcement under new manager Massimiliano Allegri’s successor situation, and Mount’s profile.
A technically gifted, versatile attacking midfielder with Premier League and international pedigree, fits exactly what they’re looking for.
The fee being discussed represented a significant loss for United.
Mount arrived from Chelsea in the summer of 2023 for a fee that could rise above £60 million with add-ons.
A deal that has, fairly or not, become symbolic of the club’s struggles in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era to recruit effectively.
Persistent injuries disrupted his first two seasons at Old Trafford almost entirely.
Carrick has been clear with the hierarchy about his stance.
He sees Mount as an important part of the midfield going forward, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding other positions in the engine room this summer, with Casemiro gone and Manuel Ugarte expected to follow.
Selling a player who finally found his feet, at a discount that wouldn’t even cover half of what United originally paid, made little sense from either a footballing or financial perspective.
For Mount himself, staying at United represents a chance to build on the progress of last season, rather than starting over in a new league at 27, just as things were beginning to click into place.
Milan will need to look elsewhere.
And United, having stood firm, can move forward with their midfield rebuild knowing Mount remains part of the picture rather than a problem still to be solved.
