Manchester United are interested in multiple midfielders this summer. They will go heavy in midfield reinforcements; there is no doubt about it.
The Red Devils have already started making moves as they have held talks with one of their primary targets, as Transfer News Live reported.
Now, they face a different type of challenge. Napoli are also working to sign the same players they are looking to sign.
Additionally, United have yet to open talks with the Serie A champions’ target player from the Premier League.
Antonio Conte wants to sign a new midfielder. The Scudetto winners were interested in Kobbie Mainoo. However, the England international is enjoying a resurgence under Michael Carrick.
That is why it is highly unlikely that Mainoo would leave next summer, as he is starting frequently for the Red Devils.
However, next summer, two United midfielders could leave, with Casemiro already confirming his exit. And the other one is expected to be Manuel Ugarte.
So, United would need to sign at least two midfielders. But now, for one of their targets, Napoli have started showing interest.
According to Nicolo Schira, Manchester United will now have to battle Napoli to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes.
The Wolves are in a precarious situation this season. They are at the bottom of the Premier League table.
In recent games, they have made a comeback with strong performances against Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal.
But if they do get relegated, it will become easier for both clubs to sign the Portuguese. It is worth noting that Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool have registered interest in Joao Gomes.
