Some careers take paths that nobody could have scripted.
From academy football to reality television.
And now, the latest chapter has come to a close.
Love Island footballer released by Macclesfield as future left wide open
According to Macclesfield FC, Tom Clare is among the players confirmed as out of contract and released following the conclusion of the 2025/26 Enterprise National League North season.
The club released their retained list on Wednesday.
Clare’s name sits among nine players listed as released.
Thus, bringing an end to a spell at Macclesfield that gave the 25-year-old consistent first-team football.
He joined Macclesfield after leaving Bamber Bridge, bringing with him a profile that suited the National League North.
His time at the club coincided with a season in which Macclesfield reached the National League North play-offs, not a failure by any measure.
However, they were eliminated by Kidderminster in a narrow two-legged tie.
Manager John Rooney, brother of former Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney, has been reshaping his squad ahead of next season’s campaign.
Seven players have been confirmed as retained for 2026/27, with a further eight still in discussion with the club.
Clare falls into neither category.
His release leaves him free to explore options elsewhere.
And at 25, with a profile that combines genuine footballing ability with one of the most recognisable faces in British reality television, there will be no shortage of clubs interested in what he brings.
Whether that’s at National League level, in the Northern Premier League, or somewhere else entirely remains to be seen.
Yet, what’s already clear is that Tom Clare’s story is far from over.
The Love Island cameras have long since moved on.
However, the football continues.
