Newcastle United are preparing for life after Bruno Guimaraes as the club accelerates plans to rebuild its midfield before the transfer window closes.
The Magpies endured a difficult 2025–26 campaign that ultimately brought an end to Eddie Howe’s reign.
Despite reaching the Champions League knockout stages, inconsistency in the Premier League left Newcastle short of their objectives.
Matthias Jaissle has since arrived as head coach to oversee a new era at St James’ Park. This summer has already transformed the squad.
Newcastle have sold Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and captain Bruno Guimaraes, while veterans Kieran Trippier and Matt Targett have also departed.
The club has responded by signing Bazoumana Toure, Aladji Bamba, Sean Steur, Ewen Jaouen and Lukas Hornicek, though further midfield reinforcements remain a priority.
Pre-season has reflected the transition. Newcastle opened with a 3-0 victory over Darlington before drawing 1-1 with Gateshead and suffering a 4-1 defeat to Bristol City.
Jaissle will hope upcoming friendlies help his young squad settle before the Premier League begins.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle United have registered their interest in Richard Rios as a replacement for Guimaraes.
The report adds that the Magpies have tracked the Benfica midfielder for some time, while Napoli are also monitoring his situation.
Rios enjoyed an outstanding 2025–26 season after joining Benfica from Palmeiras. The Colombian midfielder scored eight goals and provided six assists in 45 appearances.
He also represented Colombia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring in five matches before their round-of-16 exit.
Newcastle are considering other midfield options, including Lucas Bergvall, Victor Froholdt and long-term target Felix Nmecha.
Benfica are understood to value Rios at around €45 million. So, Newcastle could face significant competition if they decide to formalise their interest in the Colombia international.
