Some managerial appointments feel inevitable long before they’re confirmed.
And right now, almost everyone inside and outside of Old Trafford expects Michael Carrick to be handed the Manchester United job permanently at the end of the season.
Nine wins from thirteen games, with a climb from seventh into third.
Champions League football within touching distance after a two-year absence.
However, one name in particular has emerged to make this decision a great deal more complicated.
Andoni Iraola emerges as Michael Carrick replacement
According to The Telegraph, Andoni Iraola has emerged as the strongest alternative to Carrick for the permanent managerial position at Old Trafford, with United chiefs strongly admiring the Basque coach’s work at Bournemouth and his attacking philosophy viewed as a strong fit for the current squad.
Carrick remains the frontrunner.
Yet, Iraola’s availability makes this even more significant.
He confirmed his Bournemouth departure earlier this month after rejecting several contract extension offers.
A decision that has immediately placed him at the top of multiple clubs’ managerial shortlists.
Although, a return to Spain with Athletic Bilbao had been suggested, that pathway looks increasingly unlikely with Edin Terzic now close to taking that role.
For Manchester United, a victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday would mathematically seal their Champions League return.
At which point the pressure to reward Carrick will only intensify.
But Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS have shown throughout this process that they aren’t going to be rushed.
Whoever gets the job this summer will inherit a squad on an upward trajectory.
With a fanbase daring to believe again, and the weight of one of the biggest clubs in the world.
The decision matters enormously.
Yet, it hasn’t been made.
