One of Arsenal’s long-serving defenders is no longer with the club. The decision has been made quietly, without much fanfare.
But it brings an end to a chapter filled with hope, setbacks, and moments of promise that never fully blossomed.
This is a player who came to the Premier League with a strong reputation.
Signed from Serie A, he brought versatility and calm to the backline. He could play at right-back, tuck inside, or even fill in at centre-back.
Arsenal saw him as a reliable figure for Mikel Arteta’s system.
But things never quite worked out as planned as injuries began to pile up, one after the other.
And just as he looked set to make a run in the team, something would stop him.
The rhythm needed for top-level football never arrived.
The talent was there, but the timing never favoured him.
This summer, as Arsenal look to reshape their squad and focus on players who can stay fit and contribute regularly, a tough decision was taken.
The club and Takehiro Tomiyasu mutually agreed to go separate ways.
An post on X from Arsenal’s official handle confirmed the report. The 26-year-old is now a free agent.
He is still recovering from knee surgery and is not expected back until October.
When he returns, he will be available to sign with any club willing to take a chance on him.
For Tomiyasu, this is a chance to reset to find a new home where he can get back to playing football regularly.
And for Arsenal, it marks the end of a story that began with optimism, but never quite found its rhythm.
Arsenal have other areas to strengthen this summer but there is a chance that Mikel Arteta might look to fill the void that Takehiro Tomiyasu will leave behind.
Thank you, Tomi ❤️
We have reached a mutual agreement with Takehiro Tomiyasu to end his contract with immediate effect.
