Some players escape a difficult period and come back stronger.
Kobbie Mainoo was close to leaving Manchester United in January.
Barely any minutes.
A manager who didn’t trust him.
And a future that looked bleak.
And then everything changed.
Real Madrid keeping close eye on Kobbie Mainoo
According to Fichajes, Real Madrid have not removed Mainoo from their transfer radar, maintaining a close watch on the 21-year-old Manchester United midfielder as they continue to plan for midfield reinforcement either this summer or in the year ahead.
The interest is long-standing.
During the January window, when Mainoo was barely featuring under Ruben Amorim, the possibility of a move to the Bernabéu felt genuinely close.
With Madrid prepared to take advantage of a situation where a young player was visibly unhappy and starved of opportunities.
That window closed.
The arrival of Michael Carrick as head coach changed everything.
Under Carrick, Mainoo has been placed at the centre of everything.
A trusted, important figure who accumulated 1,653 Premier League minutes last season alongside one goal and two assists.
The numbers tell only part of the story.
Mainoo’s real value lies in the details that don’t appear in a stats column.
His ability to carry the ball through pressure, his pressing intensity after losing possession, and his capacity to control tempo in tight spaces.
Qualities that Real Madrid’s scouts have been watching closely for some time.
The deal has become considerably more complicated than it would have been in January.
Manchester United renewed Mainoo’s contract until 2031.
A deliberate act of protection for one of their most important academy graduates.
His market value now sits at approximately €70 million.
Any club wanting to sign him would need to arrive with a truly significant offer.
Real Madrid know this.
But they also know that players of Mainoo’s profile.
Young, physically dynamic, technically refined and capable of growing into La Liga’s demands – don’t appear often.
His name remains in Madrid’s notebook.
Not as a target for this window necessarily.
But as one for whenever the right moment arrives.
