The disastrous start of Tottenham Hotspur has highlighted a major weakness in Roberto De Zerbi’s rebuilt squad.
Spurs remain winless after five Premier League matches, collecting only two points. They also failed to score across their opening four league fixtures.
Those attacking problems have emerged despite Tottenham spending more than £300 million during the summer.
Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes arrived for substantial fees to rebuild the midfield. Jan Paul van Hecke and Andy Robertson strengthened the defence.
Tottenham also spent £75 million on Savio before adding Omar Marmoush and Mykhailo Mudryk on loan.
However, their goalscoring struggles have already forced Spurs to consider further attacking reinforcements.
According to CaughtOffside‘s Mark Brus, Tottenham Hotspur have extensively scouted Benfica striker Vangelis Pavlidis.
The Greece international has scored 14 goals across his opening 13 appearances this season.
That follows two consecutive campaigns in which Pavlidis scored 30 goals across all competitions.
Tottenham are making the addition of a striker a top priority for January. However, Aston Villa and Fulham are also long-term admirers of the 27-year-old.
Barcelona, AC Milan and Juventus are monitoring him from elsewhere in Europe. A January transfer currently appears difficult because Benfica have no intention of selling Pavlidis midway through the season.
The Portuguese club have further protected their position with a €100 million release clause.
Interested clubs may therefore need to wait until next summer before attempting to negotiate a lower price.
Pavlidis is open to joining a Premier League club, but Barcelona could provide particularly strong competition for Tottenham.
The Catalan club considered Julian Alvarez during the summer while searching for Robert Lewandowski’s replacement. They eventually signed Gabriel Jesus as a cheaper short-term solution.
Barcelona could consequently return to the striker market, with Pavlidis potentially attracted by regular football and Champions League participation.
Tottenham’s immediate need for goals has nevertheless placed the Greek striker firmly on their transfer radar.
