West Ham United are already preparing for a difficult summer as relegation fears and financial pressure continue to grow around the club.
Despite the uncertainty, club chiefs are determined not to lose their biggest talents cheaply, especially after strong interest started arriving from rival Premier League clubs.
The Hammers could face major decisions over several key players if they fail to survive in the Premier League this season. And Mateus Fernandes is one of them.
Midfield reinforcements remain one of the priorities at Manchester United ahead of next season.
Meanwhile, Manchester City are also monitoring multiple options because of the uncertainty surrounding Bernardo Silva and Rodri.
So, both clubs are looking at Mateus Fernandes after his impressive performances despite West Ham’s difficult campaign.
According to Football Insider, West Ham have now placed a huge £84 million asking price on the 21-year-old midfielder.
The report claims the Hammers view Fernandes as a crucial part of their long-term project. That is why they would only consider selling if an enormous offer arrives this summer.
Fernandes joined West Ham from Southampton last year for around £42 million. It means the London side are effectively looking to double their investment after only one season.
There is a growing belief that relegation could eventually force the club into major sales later in the transfer window.
However, West Ham reportedly want to remain in a strong negotiating position if they are eventually forced to cash in on one of their most valuable young stars.
