Chelsea have entered a new era after appointing Xabi Alonso as their manager. The Spaniard now faces a major task at Stamford Bridge following a disappointing campaign.
The Blues finished 10th last season and Alonso wants improvements across several areas of the squad. As a result, Chelsea have already started assessing potential additions ahead of the new season.
One position appears to be a priority. Chelsea have struggled to find a long-term solution between the posts despite several changes in recent years.
Robert Sanchez spent most of last season as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. However, criticism followed several of his performances during the campaign.
Chelsea later turned to Filip Jorgensen. Yet his own mistakes raised further concerns and highlighted the need for a more reliable option.
Therefore, the club have continued to monitor the market for an elite goalkeeper. They want a player capable of helping them compete at the highest level.
According to Record, Chelsea are monitoring Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa after Alonso identified him as a target for his rebuilding project at Stamford Bridge.
Costa heads to the World Cup as Portugal’s number one goalkeeper. Porto currently value him at around €60 million (£51 million), although that figure could rise if he enjoys a strong tournament.
Last season, he kept 26 clean sheets in 53 appearances and conceded only 13 league goals in 31 matches.
Interestingly, Manchester United previously considered a move for Costa. The Red Devils explored the possibility of signing him when they searched for David de Gea’s replacement.
However, Manchester United eventually signed Andre Onana instead. The club later decided against making another major investment in a goalkeeper and brought in Senne Lammens.
Now, Chelsea must decide whether to make their move before Costa’s value potentially rises at the World Cup.
