Coventry City have completed their first signing after sealing promotion to the Premier League. The midfielder will join the club on a permanent deal following a successful loan spell.
The 28-year-old arrived from a Premier League team in February to strengthen the squad during the promotion push.
He has already made 12 appearances and added energy and experience to the midfield. The deal always depended on one key condition, which is Coventry needed to secure promotion.
They achieved that on Friday night after a 1-1 draw against Blackburn, ending a 25-year wait to return to the top flight.
That result automatically triggered the clause in Frank Onyeka’s loan agreement.
Brentford had confirmed that condition earlier in the season, making it clear the move would become permanent if Coventry went up. The club statement read:
“Frank Onyeka joins Sky Bet Championship club Coventry City on loan for the remainder of the season.
“The deal will become permanent in the summer should the Sky Blues secure promotion to the Premier League.”
Onyeka brings valuable Premier League experience. He joined Brentford from FC Midtjylland in 2021 and made 87 appearances for the club.
During that period, he played a key role as they established themselves in the top flight.
However, his role reduced over time. He spent last season on loan at FC Augsburg before returning to England.
This season, he made only a handful of appearances for Brentford before Coventry moved quickly to bring him in. The decision has already paid off.
Onyeka featured in the crucial match at Ewood Park as Coventry confirmed promotion. Now, he will prepare for the next challenge.
Coventry are not done yet. They can still finish the season as champions, with a win over Portsmouth enough to seal the title.
