Much of Manchester United’s recent rise in form is due to the brilliance of Bruno Fernandes. The captain of the Red Devils has become a contender for the Player of the Season Award.
Because of his brilliance, the club have climbed to third in the Premier League and now look set for a return to the Champions League.
That surge has come alongside a clear tactical shift since the change in management earlier this year. Under Ruben Amorim, Fernandes often operated in a deeper midfield role within a 3-4-2-1 system.
That setup limited his influence in attacking areas, even though he remained central to the team’s structure.
Since Amorim’s departure in January, Manchester United have reverted to a more familiar 4-2-3-1 formation. That change has had an immediate impact.
Bruno Fernandes has returned to his preferred No. 10 role, and the results have been significant. The 31-year-old has produced 11 of his 18 Premier League assists since the tactical switch.
Michael Carrick has now addressed that transformation. Speaking about Fernandes’ form, Michael Carrick suggested that giving him more freedom has been crucial. He said:
“Well, certainly personally, I think giving Bruno the platform to go and perform, like all the players.
“I think we’re trying to create a structure and a team set-up, really, to try and bring out the best of everyone within that.”
“But, for me, I like seeing Bruno in attacking positions with a little bit of freedom.”
That approach has allowed Fernandes to influence games more consistently. Despite his attacking role, the midfielder has still contributed defensively.
Carrick highlighted that aspect as well, praising his work rate without the ball. Fernandes has also shown versatility throughout the season.
He has played as a false nine, operated on the right, and even filled in at centre-back during a key FA Cup match in 2024. However, Carrick made it clear where he believes the captain is most effective.
“Trust in him, he’s a very good player, he sees things, he is creative, he has got a really good brain.”
With Manchester United pushing towards a strong finish, Bruno Fernandes continues to play a central role under Michael Carrick.
