Ruben Amorim’s time at Manchester United ended in disappointment, but his reputation has not completely faded.
The Portuguese coach arrived with high expectations but struggled to impose his ideas. His rigid commitment to a 3-4-3 system drew heavy criticism, especially as results failed to improve.
Recently, the current Manchester United manager, Michael Carrick, has aimed a subtle dig at Amorim because of his use of Bruno Fernandes.
He eventually lost his job earlier this year after a difficult spell that included public frustration with the club’s hierarchy. However, that setback has not erased what he achieved before that.
At Sporting, Amorim built one of the most exciting teams in Europe. He transformed the club, delivered silverware, and re-established them as a dominant force in Portugal.
That success continues to carry weight. Now, despite his struggles at Old Trafford, there is a growing belief that he could thrive in a different Premier League environment.
Former midfielder Jason Puncheon is one of those backing him to take up the role at Crystal Palace. Speaking to The Mirror, he explained why the manager deserves another chance. He said:
“The reason being is he went to Sporting, brought that team up out of nowhere, rebuilt himself and did well.
“When he went to Manchester United, it’s a different pressure. You’re trying to change a team into 3-4-3. That takes time.”
“At Manchester United, you don’t have time. I think at Crystal Palace, he’s going to have that time.”
Crystal Palace are expected to part ways with Oliver Glasner at the end of the season, despite a strong campaign. His team is in the UEFA Conference League semi-final.
With the club already operating in a similar system, Amorim could step in without needing major tactical changes.
And if that happens, Ruben Amorim may yet get the Premier League comeback many thought was unlikely.
