Marcus Rashford sparked fresh speculation over his future after an unexpected social media interaction involving Manchester United earlier this week.
The forward has kept his distance from the club publicly for months. Since leaving on loan to Barcelona, there has been very little activity linking him with United on social media.
Rashford’s X account unexpectedly reposted a message from Manchester United celebrating their return to the Champions League and encouraging supporters to buy memberships for next season.
Shortly after, Rashford quote-tweeted the same post with the word “Congratulations” followed by a heart emoji.
The reaction immediately caught attention online. It was the first Manchester United-related activity from Rashford on the platform in nearly a year.
However, despite the post, there does not appear to be any change behind the scenes regarding his future.
According to The Sun, Manchester United still have no plans to bring Rashford back into their first-team squad next season.
Senior figures at the club reportedly still want to sell the England international this summer. Rashford is also reportedly against returning after a difficult final few years at Old Trafford.
Now, Barcelona currently have an option to sign him permanently for £26 million following his loan spell, but there are doubts over whether they will trigger the clause.
Rashford has scored 13 goals in 46 appearances for Barcelona this season. However, he has not started any of their last five matches.
There have also been several signs suggesting he sees his future away from Manchester United.
Rashford has removed references to Manchester United from his social media bios, and he has rebranded himself as “MR14” in reference to his Barcelona squad number.
United have already moved on in some areas. The No.10 shirt was handed to Matheus Cunha last summer after Rashford was placed in a pre-season “bomb squad” before leaving on loan.
For now, Rashford still wants to remain at Barcelona. But if the Spanish club decide against a permanent move, his future could become one of the biggest stories of the summer.
