Arsenal are reportedly preparing to battle several major European clubs for one of the Premier League’s standout young midfielders this summer.
Mikel Arteta continues searching for ways to strengthen his squad despite already possessing strong depth in central midfield.
The Arsenal manager wants more flexibility and energy in his squad ahead of another season competing for both Premier League and Champions League honours.
According to The Times, the Gunners have now joined Manchester United in monitoring Mateus Fernandes of West Ham United.
The 21-year-old has emerged as one of the few bright spots during West Ham’s difficult campaign near the bottom of the table.
Fernandes only arrived from Southampton last summer but has already built a strong reputation because of his performances in midfield.
The Portuguese youngster has impressed with his versatility, technical quality and ability to carry the ball through central areas.
Arteta reportedly views those qualities as an ideal fit for Arsenal’s tactical system.
Fernandes has also shown he can operate in several different positions across midfield and wider attacking areas when needed.
His rapid rise has attracted attention far beyond North London. Liverpool, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, and AC Milan are all reportedly tracking the midfielder ahead of the summer window.
West Ham are understood to value Fernandes at around £84 million despite signing him only a year ago. The situation could become complicated if the Hammers suffer relegation.
Fernandes previously came through the academy at Sporting CP before moving to English football in 2024. He also received his first senior Portugal call-up earlier this year.
Arsenal’s growing interest now places another major European side firmly into the race for one of the Premier League’s most wanted young midfielders.
