Manchester United set to complete first summer signing

Transfer Update - Manchester United

Manchester United are now closing in on their first major signing of the summer after accelerating plans for a midfield rebuild at Old Trafford.

The club already confirmed Casemiro will leave after the end of the season, while uncertainty also continues surrounding Manuel Ugarte’s future.

As a result, strengthening central midfield quickly became one of the biggest priorities for new manager Michael Carrick, Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada heading into the transfer window.

Manchester United explored several options across Europe. Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson remained one of the dream targets.

However, reports suggest the England midfielder currently prefers a move to Manchester City instead. That situation forced United to intensify talks elsewhere.

According to Italian journalist Luca Cilli, Manchester United have now reached a full agreement with Atalanta to sign Ederson.

The report claims the deal will cost an initial €48 million with another €5 million included in add-ons.

Previous reports already suggested the Brazilian midfielder agreed personal terms with Manchester United earlier this month.

Now, after the clubs reportedly finalised an agreement, Ederson appears set to become Carrick’s first signing as permanent manager.

Atletico Madrid also admired the midfielder but reportedly stepped away because of Atalanta’s valuation.

Ederson only has one year remaining on his contract in Bergamo, but Atalanta still demanded a major fee for one of Serie A’s most consistent midfielders.

Despite moving quickly for Ederson, Manchester United continue monitoring several other midfielders.

Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes all remain on the club’s shortlist.

Real Madrid pair Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde also attracted interest earlier in the summer.

So, Ederson looks set to become the first piece of Manchester United’s new-look midfield rebuild.
