Manchester United are preparing for a major midfield rebuild this summer. However, several departures and tactical concerns have increased the pressure on the club.
Casemiro has already played his final game for the club. The Brazilian’s last appearance came against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.
United closed the campaign with Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount operating in the double pivot against Brighton. Meanwhile, uncertainty also surrounds Manuel Ugarte’s future.
The Uruguayan midfielder is reportedly unlikely to accept a reduced role after falling behind Mount in the pecking order.
Therefore, Manchester United are aggressively exploring multiple midfield additions ahead of their return to the Champions League.
Atalanta midfielder Ederson looked set to become the first arrival after United agreed a £35M deal with the Italian side.
However, his late inclusion in Brazil’s World Cup squad could delay final formalities including his medical and contract signing.
United have still continued working on other targets in the background. West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes has emerged as another major option for the Old Trafford hierarchy.
According to Sully, Manchester United and West Ham have opened club-to-club discussions regarding Fernandes this summer.
However, negotiations could become complicated because of ongoing instability behind the scenes at the London Stadium following David Sullivan’s departure.
United are also reluctant to meet West Ham’s reported £80M asking price. The club do not want the transfer to become another lengthy saga during an already important rebuild.
Meanwhile, even if Ederson and Fernandes both arrive, United are still expected to pursue further midfield options before the transfer window closes.
#MUFC have begun talks with #WHU for Mateus Fernandes. United have no desire to pay the £80M asking fee from West Ham and ideally don’t want a long saga. 21 yo is keen on a move as reported. However, internal chaos at #WHU after Sullivan left. @UtdDistrict https://t.co/iUZ8IYmkIk
