Arsenal star ruled out of the World Cup

Jurrien Timber ruled out of 2026 World Cup as Netherlands confirm groin injury.

Some injury news lands at the worst possible moment.

Jurrien Timber has endured one of the most difficult ends to a season imaginable.

Missing Arsenal’s title run-in, returning only briefly for the Champions League final defeat to PSG.

And now watching the World Cup slip away too.

The 24-year-old will not be playing for the Netherlands in North America this summer.

And the timing couldn’t be more heartbreaking.

Jurrien Timber ruled out of 2026 World Cup as Netherlands confirm groin injury

According to Sky Sports, the Netherlands Football Association confirmed on Monday that Timber will leave the national team’s pre-camp in New York following their warm-up match against Uzbekistan, with the defender’s groin injury having failed to heal to a level where his participation would be considered medically responsible.

The injury that has ended his tournament hopes was first sustained in mid-March.

During Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Everton.

He subsequently missed seven consecutive league games as the Gunners sealed the title without him.

A cruel irony for a player whose defensive contributions earlier in the season had been central to their success.

He returned as a substitute in the second half of the Champions League final against PSG last month.

A brief comeback that suggested, at the time, that he might be in contention for the World Cup.

It wasn’t enough.

His groin hasn’t healed at the pace required for tournament football at this level.

For Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman, the blow is significant.

Timber had established himself as one of the most technically assured players in the Dutch setup.

And the mathematician Joachim Klement, who has correctly predicted the last three World Cup winners, tipped the Netherlands to lift the trophy this summer.

Whether they can do it without one of their most important defenders is a question they’ll now have to answer across the coming weeks.

Netherlands open their campaign against Japan on June 14.

However, Timber won’t be there.

For a player who has already survived one serious long-term injury, this latest setback will cut deeply.

He’ll be back.

That much is certain.

But the World Cup this summer is not his to experience.
