Manchester United end pursuit of €60M defender

United have now decided to withdraw from the race.

Manchester United continue working on defensive reinforcements ahead of the new season as Michael Carrick reshapes his squad.

The Red Devils returned to the Champions League and now want greater depth across several positions. Left-back remains one of the areas under review despite Luke Shaw enjoying one of his most consistent seasons in recent years.

Shaw started 38 Premier League matches during the 2025-26 campaign. However, his lengthy injury history continues to concern decision-makers at Old Trafford.

One player who attracted serious interest was Eintracht Frankfurt defender Nathaniel Brown. The 22-year-old enjoyed an impressive breakthrough season in the Bundesliga and emerged as one of Europe’s most highly-rated young full-backs.

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United held positive preliminary talks with Brown’s representatives earlier this year.

However, the club have now decided to withdraw from the race. German reports suggest that Bayern Munich have moved aggressively to secure the defender’s signature.

The German giants are reportedly finalising a package worth more than €60M ahead of the World Cup. Brown has also reportedly agreed personal terms with Bayern, making a move to the Bundesliga champions increasingly likely.

That development forced United to redirect their attention elsewhere. One name now moving up the shortlist is Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall.

The 21-year-old has reportedly emerged as Carrick’s preferred option as United search for competition and cover at left-back.

United reportedly believe the England youth international would welcome the opportunity to move to Old Trafford. However, completing a deal will not be straightforward.

Newcastle already lost Anthony Gordon to Barcelona earlier this summer and remain determined to keep the core of their squad together.

As a result, United may need to test Newcastle’s resolve with a significant offer if they decide to progress their interest.
