Manchester United enjoyed a strong 2025-26 Premier League campaign after a difficult previous period.
Michael Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim in January and quickly stabilised the squad. The Red Devils finished third and secured their return to the UEFA Champions League.
The summer has now become another important phase at Old Trafford. United are working on a major squad shake-up to support Carrick’s plans.
Midfield remains the biggest priority, with Ederson close to arriving from Atalanta.
United have also created space in the squad. Rasmus Højlund has joined Napoli permanently, while Casemiro, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia have departed.
However, Carrick will not want to weaken important areas while rebuilding the squad. Meanwhile, Amorim has started a new chapter at AC Milan.
The Portuguese coach took charge after Milan missed out on Champions League qualification. He has now been tasked with leading a major rebuild at San Siro.
According to Italian journalist Antonio Vitiello, Ruben Amorim wants AC Milan to sign Lisandro Martinez from Manchester United.
The report claims Amorim is “crazy about” Martinez and Goncalo Inacio, with contacts already made for both defenders.
Amorim reportedly hopes Milan can sign one of the two centre-backs this summer. Martinez is now firmly on Milan’s radar, despite United’s reluctance to sell.
The Argentine endured a frustrating 2025-26 campaign at Old Trafford. He made only 19 appearances in all competitions because of ACL and calf injuries.
However, Martinez remains an important defender for Manchester United when fit. He even captained the side three times around the Christmas period. That is why United do not want to sell him this summer.
Still, his contract situation gives INEOS a decision to make. Martinez’s current deal expires next year. United must either offer fresh terms or consider a sale while his value remains strong.
If United keep Martinez, Milan are expected to push harder for Inacio. For now, Amorim wants a defensive reunion, but Manchester United are not ready to weaken Carrick’s backline.
🚨 AC Milan have stepped up their search for a new centre-back, with Gonçalo Inácio and Lisandro Martínez emerging as Ruben Amorim’s preferred targets.
