Arsenal ready to hijack Liverpool’s deal for defender

Liverpool may be able to offer a clearer path towards regular football

Arsenal are continuing to strengthen their squad after last season’s remarkable campaign.

Mikel Arteta guided the club to their first Premier League title in 22 years and also reached the Champions League final.

The Gunners have already completed several moves during the summer window.

Piero Hincapie has joined permanently from Bayer Leverkusen, while Illan Meslier has arrived on a free transfer.

Arsenal are also preparing for Leandro Trossard’s expected move to Besiktas and continue to pursue further additions. Now, Liverpool are also rebuilding following the appointment of Andoni Iraola.

Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate have all left Anfield this summer as a new era begins on Merseyside.

The Reds have already brought in Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz as part of that rebuild. However, both clubs now appear set to battle for the same defensive target.

According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal have placed Lutsharel Geertruida on their shortlist as they look to add greater depth on the right side of defence.

The report adds that Liverpool are also monitoring the Dutch international, with Iraola valuing his tactical flexibility.

Geertruida spent last season on loan at Sunderland and impressed during his time in the Premier League.

The defender featured across several positions and established himself as one of the club’s most reliable performers.

His ability to operate at right-back, centre-back and in midfield has increased his appeal this summer.

With a reported price tag of around €25 million, Arsenal could view the deal as an attractive opportunity.

However, Liverpool may be able to offer the Dutchman a clearer path towards regular football. That could make this one of the more intriguing battles of the summer transfer window.
