The future of Julian Alvarez has become one of the biggest transfer stories of the summer.
The Argentine has made no secret of his desire to join Barcelona following an impressive season at Atletico Madrid.
Despite frustrations with Diego Simeone’s style of play, the forward still managed 20 goals and 10 assists across all competitions. He also reminded everyone of his quality at the World Cup.
After a quiet start to the tournament, Alvarez scored the extra-time winner against Switzerland to send Argentina into the semi-finals.
That performance only increased interest in his services across Europe. Barcelona remain determined to bring the striker to Camp Nou and continue to work on a deal.
However, Atletico Madrid have shown little interest in helping their rivals strengthen.
The Madrid club have already made it clear that they do not want to negotiate with either Barcelona or Real Madrid.
Earlier this summer, Atletico even threatened to file a complaint over alleged tapping-up involving Barcelona. As a result, Arsenal have sensed an opportunity to enter the race.
According to TEAMtalk, Atletico Madrid are prepared to sanction a move to Arsenal if Julian Alvarez leaves the club this summer.
The report states that Andrea Berta has already held direct talks with the player’s representatives. Paris Saint-Germain have also maintained contact throughout the summer.
However, Barcelona remain the player’s preferred destination despite growing concerns over whether the Catalan club can complete the deal.
That situation continues to encourage Arsenal behind the scenes. TEAMtalk also reports that Atletico would much rather sell Alvarez abroad than strengthen either Barcelona or Real Madrid.
For Mikel Arteta’s side, that decision could provide a significant advantage if Barcelona fail to complete the transfer. Arsenal remain ready to move quickly should that opportunity arise.
