Arsenal line up shock move for former Manchester City star

The Gunners are looking to build on that success as they prepare to defend their Premier League crown next season.

Arsenal had a memorable 2025-26 campaign as they finally managed to win the Premier League title after a 22-year wait.

Now, the Gunners are looking to build on that success as they prepare to defend their Premier League crown next season.

Arsenal have already signed Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for around £34 million during the summer transfer window.

Also, they permanently completed a deal for Piero Hincapie and signed goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer.

However, Arsenal could now strengthen their defence further following the injury William Saliba suffered during the World Cup.

The French defender suffered a back problem during France’s semi-final defeat against Spain and had to leave the pitch.

Saliba is yet to undergo an assessment at Arsenal. However, there are fears that he could remain sidelined for five months.

As a result, Mikel Arteta could now look towards the free-agent market for short-term defensive cover ahead of next season.

According to The Sun, Arsenal are considering a shock move for former Manchester City defender John Stones as a possible replacement for Saliba.

Arteta knows the 32-year-old well after working with him during his time as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City.

Stones left Manchester City as a free agent at the end of June following ten years at the club.

He endured a difficult final campaign at the Etihad Stadium after struggling for regular playing time during the 2025-26 season.

In fact, Stones made just nine Premier League appearances and started only four games across all competitions after November.

However, Thomas Tuchel still selected him for England’s World Cup squad despite his limited playing time at Manchester City. His former club Everton are showing interest, while Italian giants AC Milan are also looking at a potential move.

However, reuniting with Arteta at the reigning Premier League champions could become an attractive option if Arsenal accelerate their interest.
