Manchester United endured a disastrous Champions League trip to Como both on and off the pitch. Michael Carrick’s side suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.
Nico Paz opened the scoring inside two minutes before Como took complete control after half-time. Anastasios Douvikas doubled the hosts’ advantage before Paz scored his second of the evening.
Jacobo Ramon later added a fourth for Cesc Fabregas’ side. Joshua Zirkzee scored a stoppage-time consolation, but United could not disguise another damaging European performance.
The defeat extended their winless sequence to seven matches across all competitions. However, serious trouble involving United supporters had already occurred hours before the match.
According to the Daily Mail, three Manchester United fans were hospitalised following a fight at the Krudo Bar in Como’s Piazza Volta.
Reports in Italy stated that around 10 United supporters became involved in the confrontation. Footage showed an initial dispute inside the bar before the situation escalated.
One supporter knocked an older man to the floor during the violence. The disturbance also left shattered glass inside the venue, while blood could be seen on the floor.
Police attended the incident at around 1 am. Two ambulances and a medical car also arrived to treat those involved. Three supporters, aged 43, 45 and 49, received treatment at the scene.
Medical staff then transported all three to Sant’Anna Hospital. Reports later indicated that they had suffered only minor injuries.
Como police have since launched an investigation into the incident. British officers are assisting the investigation as authorities work to identify those involved.
The violence added another troubling dimension to a miserable trip for United, which ended with Carrick’s team suffering a heavy Champions League defeat.
