Manchester United have made their position clear on Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese manager, under heavy pressure just a week ago, is now safe for the time being.
Heading into the game against Sunderland, Amorim’s future looked uncertain. United had won only two of their first six Premier League matches, drawing once and losing three.
The 3-1 defeat to Brentford pushed fans to the edge, and rumours of a managerial change began to grow.
However, a much-needed 2-0 win against newly-promoted Sunderland changed the mood at Old Trafford.
Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko scored in the first half to ease the tension and give Amorim some breathing space.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United were never planning to sack Amorim even if the result had gone against them.
On his YouTube channel, the journalist revealed that only “something completely crazy” would have forced the club’s hand.
Romano explained that Amorim’s position was never under direct threat unless United had suffered a heavy defeat losing by three, four or five goals.
The club hierarchy wanted stability and did not want to make another emotional decision.
The Italian journalist added that United intend to use the international break to “fix things” and “help their manager” rather than replace him.
The board, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, still believe in Amorim’s long-term vision for the team.
Rumours linking former England boss Gareth Southgate to Old Trafford have also been dismissed.
Romano confirmed that while Southgate maintains a “very good” relationship with INEOS, there have been no talks or negotiations about the Manchester United job.
Amorim remains under contract until 2027, and the club are not looking to spend again on managerial payouts.
The Red Devils have already paid over £72 million to replace past coaches over the last decade.
Now, the task is simple for Amorim. He must build on the Sunderland win and lead United on a steady run after the break.
The Portuguese boss’ next test will be a massive clash against Liverpool at Anfield on October 19.
