Raheem Sterling has made a decision that few expected this late in the season. After leaving Chelsea as a free agent last month, he took his time before committing to his next challenge.
According to reports, around 18 clubs made enquiries about his situation. Yet he refused to be hurried. Instead, he held detailed conversations with interested sides and their head coaches.
Sterling explained his thinking clearly. He said after confirming the signing:
“As a free agent, I have had, for the first time in a long time, the opportunity to control the next step in my career.
“I wanted to take my time to speak with clubs and their Head Coaches to better understand the role they envisioned for me and ensure that I can add real value in this next chapter.”
Meanwhile, one conversation stood out. After extensive talks, Sterling felt convinced about the project placed in front of him. He added:
“Having spoken in great detail with Robin (van Persie), I am confident that Feyenoord is a place I can be happy and establish myself as a valued member of the team.
“Playing abroad is a whole new challenge for me and one I am ready to embrace. Honestly, I am just excited to get started.”
As a result, Raheem Sterling has now officially signed for Eredivisie side Feyenoord until the end of the season.
The 31-year-old will link up with Robin van Persie, who welcomed the move warmly despite their Premier League rivalry during their playing days.
Sterling has not played since May 2024. Therefore, he will aim to regain sharpness quickly. Feyenoord currently sit second in the Eredivisie, 17 points behind PSV.
They face Go Ahead Eagles on Sunday at De Kuip. Now, Sterling begins a new chapter abroad, ready to prove that he still has plenty left to offer.
