England will take on Croatia in their first game of the 2026 World Cup in Texas. But the Three Lions will be without one of their most experienced players.

However, the decision did not come from the manager. It came from the player himself after more than a decade representing his country.

Kyle Walker has officially announced his retirement from international football. The 35-year-old confirmed the news just months before the World Cup.

Walker made 96 appearances for England after debuting against Spain in 2011 at the age of 21.

Across that period, he featured in five major tournaments and played 24 matches at international competitions. His England journey included several memorable runs.

Walker was part of the side that reached the World Cup semi-finals in Russia in 2018 under Gareth Southgate.

The former Manchester City player also featured in consecutive European Championship finals, where England fell short against Italy in 2021 and Spain in 2024.

Walker’s only international goal came in 2023 against Ukraine. His final appearance for England arrived last June during a 3-1 friendly defeat to Senegal.

With 96 caps, Walker finishes his career 11th on England’s all-time appearance list, narrowly missing out on the 100-cap milestone. Announcing his retirement on The Overlap, Walker said:

“Playing for England has always been the greatest honour of my career. Every time I pulled on the shirt, it meant a huge amount to my family and me.”

England head coach Thomas Tuchel also paid tribute to the defender. The German said:

“I know all England fans will join me in congratulating Kyle on an incredible international career.”

Walker now turns his focus fully to club football with Burnley, who currently sit 19th in the Premier League with nine matches remaining.
