The situation of Neymar Jr. is a curious case in world football. The Brazilian was destined to be one of the greatest players of all time.
He had the potential to compete with the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for top honours in world football.
That is why his move to PSG in 2017 for a world-record fee of €222 million was a statement to the entire world.
Many believed that Neymar was in the shadows of Messi when he was a part of the famous MSN trio.
The Messi-Suarez-Neymar trio was perhaps the most lethal attacking trio of all time for the sheer volume of goals and the impact they had on the outcome of results.
After moving to PSG, things started going downhill for Neymar. He had the potential of winning the coveted Ballon d’Or.
However, his performances at PSG left more questions about the decision of the French side to sign him with such an amount of money.
Since then, Neymar moved to Al-Hilal. This move became a disaster for both the Saudi club and the player. However, Neymar made good money there.
After leaving Saudi Arabia after just one season, Neymar came back to his native club Santos to get his career back on track.
However, since his return to Santos, the Brazilian scored just 6 times and assisted 3 times in 21 games.
These numbers are nothing in comparison to his last stint at Santos, where he scored 136 times in 225 games.
But Europe saw what Neymar could do during his spells at Barcelona and Neymar. That is why the 33-year-old was linked with a move back to Europe, with a Turkish club showing interest.
However, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, Italian champions Napoli wanted to sign Neymar in January. The Napoli Sporting Director, Giovanni Manna, seriously contemplated the move.
Both Kevin De Bruyne and Neymar were options for the eventual Scudetto winners. However, in the end, they went with the Manchester City talisman.
So, the ghost from the past is still haunting the Brazilian as he continues to struggle to get his career back on track with an eye on a return to Europe.
