A tragic accident has claimed the life of a former Bundesliga footballer. The incident has left the football community in shock. However, the circumstances surrounding it are unusual.
The accident happened during a routine cycling trip. The former striker was riding along a bike path near Bad Kissingen in Germany. Everything appeared normal at the time.
But suddenly, a deer crossed his path. The collision threw him off his bicycle. Meanwhile, he was not wearing a helmet, and it proved crucial.
A passing driver later found him lying beside the road. He called the emergency services. Paramedics arrived quickly and provided first aid. They then transported him to the hospital for further treatment.
However, the injuries were severe. Despite efforts to save him, Reiner Wirsching passed away on Saturday. Reports suggest the impact caused him to fall onto his head.
His brother later confirmed he suffered a serious skull base fracture. The injury led to heavy bleeding, leaving almost no chance of survival.
Meanwhile, tributes have poured in from across football. His former club, 1. FC Nuremberg expressed their condolences. They released a statement, saying:
“Our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences go out to all his loved ones.”
Wirsching had enjoyed a notable career in Germany. He made 72 Bundesliga appearances for 1. FC Nuremberg, scoring 14 goals. He also played for several other clubs before retiring in 2001.
After football, he moved into medicine. He studied at the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg and worked in orthopaedics and sports medicine.
Der #FCN trauert um Reiner #Wirsching. Der ehemalige Club-Profi ist am Wochenende im Alter von nur 63 Jahren verstorben. Unser tief empfundenes Mitgefühl gilt all seinen Angehörigen. 🙏
