Casemiro looked certain to leave Manchester United this summer. The Brazilian had already indicated earlier in the season that he was ready to move on from Old Trafford.
There were strong reasons behind that decision. He is one of the highest-paid players at the club, and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is keen to reduce the wage bill.
Because of that, Inter Miami have emerged as a likely destination, with David Beckham’s side keen to bring him to the MLS to play alongside Lionel Messi.
Now, replacing a player of his experience would not be easy, especially with the club aiming to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level.
However, Matheus Cunha has now suggested that Casemiro could still make a surprise U-turn and remain at Manchester United next season. Speaking about his international teammate, Cunha said:
“I play with him in the national team and I know how important he is. He’s an amazing guy. And yeah, to have this guy in the dressing room is a privilege.
“We don’t know in the end how it is with his contract, and then of course we, everyone, hopes there’s a little bit more.
“Of course, of course, I know it’s harder than we talked about, but yeah, in the end, you never know.”
Meanwhile, Cunha also backed Michael Carrick to take the managerial role permanently.
The interim boss has impressed since taking charge and guided the team to Champions League qualification. Cunha said:
“I don’t think it’s in my hands, but what he did, he’s full of confidence in the group. I think he has the magic with like these Ferguson times.
“To be part of everything, when he did this, it’s amazing. He’s a pleasure, and of course, I think he deserves it.”
The Brazilian forward also made it clear that United must push for bigger honours next season.
