Arsenal remain top of the Premier League, but Mikel Arteta believes there is still room for Declan Rice to expand his influence.
In the midweek, Arsenal welcomed Brentford in a fixture that sometimes has proven tricky for Mikel Arteta. So, it was important to come out with three points.
It was important for another reason. Before that game, Manchester City were just two points behind the Gunners. But a 2-0 win has stretched that gap to five points once again.
After of the midweek clash with Brentford, the Arsenal manager revealed he wants the midfielder to evolve further as a set-piece weapon, particularly with long throws.
Rice has already transformed Arsenal’s dead-ball threat since arriving in 2023. He has become the designated taker for corners, free-kicks and attacking throws.
Arsenal and Manchester United jointly lead the league for set-piece goals this season. Yet, none have come from throw-ins, an area Arteta believes can still be unlocked.
On Wednesday, Rice faced the division’s standout long-throw specialist, Brentford full-back Michael Kayode. His 33.2-metre average delivery has already produced goals for the visitors.
Before the game, Arteta called Kayode’s throw “a massive weapon” and admitted the chaos it creates is difficult to contain.
As per talkSPORT, when asked whether Rice can compete with that level, Arteta was firm in his belief that development is possible.
He pointed to how far Rice has come in set-piece quality over recent years, adding that technique improves only through training, repetition and belief.
In his view, Rice possesses the attributes to take on almost any responsibility.
However, Mikel Arteta might have to give Declan Rice more time to develop this attribute as he got injured in that game.
In the post-match press conference, Arteta address the situation. Arsenal will be hoping to have Rice back for their next Premier League game this weekend against Aston Villa.
