Arsenal are preparing for a crucial fixture. The Gunners face Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-final this weekend.

So, squad availability has become a major talking point, as several players are dealing with fitness concerns.

Also, the international break created more questions. However, a number of Arsenal players withdrew from national duty.

In fact, nearly half of the Premier League withdrawals came from Arsenal, and that has raised eyebrows.

Five players pulled out after the Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City, and another five withdrew after joining their national teams.

Also, Martin Odegaard missed Norway’s matches. That took the total number of sidelined players to 11. However, Mikel Arteta has defended the situation. He said during the press conference:

“We have very good relationships and communication with most of the national teams. Certainly with Thomas [Tuchel]. We’ve been extremely supportive all the time.”

“In the end there was a medical decision that has to be made. When a player is fit and available, he has to play.”

However, he remained cautious when asked about returns. Now, there is some positive news for the Gunners as Noni Madueke has avoided a serious injury.

He picked up a knee issue against Uruguay, and scans confirmed it is not severe. Arteta said:

“It looked really bad… but no, it’s nowhere near that injury. That was really good news.”

Mikel Arteta also suggested a quick return for the England international. Martin Odegaard is also closing in on a comeback. He has been out since February 22 with a knee injury.

Jurrien Timber could return as well. He missed the last two games with a groin issue. However, not everyone is available. Eberechi Eze remains out with a calf injury.

Also, Piero Hincapie is ruled out. He picked up a hamstring issue during Ecuador’s draw with Morocco.

There are also minor concerns elsewhere. Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka withdrew from England duty. Thomas Tuchel confirmed it was precautionary. So, both could be rested against Southampton.

So, Arsenal will be hoping to have the majority of their squad back before they take on Manchester City at the Etihad on 19th April.

Prior to that crucial Premier League clash, the Gunners will have two games against Sporting CP in the Champions League quarter-final.
