Julian Alvarez remains at the centre of one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer window.
The Argentine enjoyed another productive campaign with Atletico Madrid despite the club failing to win major silverware.
Alvarez scored eight goals and provided four assists in La Liga during the 2025-26 season.
He also produced an impressive Champions League campaign, scoring ten goals before Atletico’s European journey ended.
His focus then shifted towards the World Cup, where Argentina reached the final before losing 1-0 to Spain.
During the tournament, Alvarez publicly suggested that a transfer could represent the best outcome for everyone involved.
Barcelona have remained strongly interested in signing him as they search for Robert Lewandowski’s long-term replacement.
However, Atletico have refused to negotiate with their domestic rivals despite Alvarez’s desire to move to Barcelona.
Arsenal have also entered the race. However, Alvarez has remained reluctant to return to England and continues prioritising a move to Barcelona.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Julian Alvarez’s agent Fernando Hidalgo has hit back at Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin with a major public statement. Hidalgo wrote on Instagram:
“Never ask a liar why they lied. To explain, they would have to lie again.”
His message arrived after Gil Marin questioned the advice Alvarez has received regarding his professional career in recent months.
Gil Marin also indicated that Atletico remain determined to help Alvarez rediscover his enthusiasm and continue performing for the club.
However, Hidalgo’s response has added another layer of tension to an already complicated transfer situation.
Banners demanding Alvarez’s departure also appeared at Atletico’s training ground in Majadahonda before the agent’s public reaction.
