Arsenal enter the new season as Premier League champions after finally ending their 22-year title drought.
Mikel Arteta’s side also reached the Champions League final, where Paris Saint-Germain beat them on penalties. The Gunners have strengthened again this summer.
Bruno Guimaraes is closing in on a £75 million move from Newcastle United, while Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier have also arrived.
Pre-season has produced mixed results. Arsenal beat MK Dons and Girona before suffering a 3-1 defeat against Real Betis.
Borussia Dortmund and Como remain on their schedule before the Community Shield against Manchester City.
Manchester United are also rebuilding after finishing third last season under Michael Carrick.
Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have strengthened midfield, while Rasmus Hojlund has joined Napoli permanently.
United could also allow Joshua Zirkzee to leave and want another striker behind Benjamin Sesko.
According to The Sun, Arsenal and Manchester United are now monitoring Pio Esposito after sending scouts to watch the Inter Milan striker against AC Milan in pre-season.
The 21-year-old impressed both clubs, and their scouts returned positive assessments.
Arsenal have tracked him for several months as Arteta searches for more competition behind Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz.
United have also compiled an extensive dossier on the Italy international. However, they are not rushing to submit an offer and could wait for Inter’s position to soften.
Inter publicly regard Esposito as untouchable. However, the report states that intermediaries have communicated a valuation of around £73 million.
The 6ft 3in striker is reportedly open to playing in the Premier League. He is not pushing to leave San Siro, but interest from Arsenal or United could tempt him.
Arsenal currently appear further ahead in their interest. United remain firmly in the picture, setting up another potential transfer battle between the two Premier League rivals.
