Barcelona are already planning for next summer’s transfer market. The club want to strengthen their defense after a busy few months, and the need for a left-footed centre-back has become clear.
With Inigo Martínez gone to Al Nassr, the search has started for someone who can give balance at the back.
Hansi Flick has made it a priority. The German coach wants a defender who can play out from the back, defend aggressively, and offer leadership in big games.
Barcelona’s squad looks competitive, but Flick sees room for more stability, especially in a Champions League campaign where small details make the difference.
The shortlist is not long. Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni is a name that Flick admires, as reported by Transfer News Live earlier. But his price tag is considered too high.
Barcelona know that such a move would require a huge financial push, something the club are not ready for right now.
Instead, according to Fichajes, the focus has turned to Lisandro Martinez, who may fit both the budget and the style of play. Flick is a big admirer of the 27-year-old defender from Manchester United.
The Argentine’s speed, positioning, and ability to start attacks from the back make him a strong candidate.
His contract runs until 2027. But with only two years left after this season, the chance for negotiations could open up.
But Martinez does come with injury concerns. He is currently recovering from a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury, and he will not be available until early 2026.
Yet last season, when fit, he played 32 matches for United. The Argentine showed he remains one of the toughest defenders in the Premier League.
For Joan Laporta, this could be a strategic signing. Injuries of Martinez reduce the cost and open the door to a deal that would otherwise be very expensive.
Compared to Bastoni, Martínez would be cheaper, and his experience at the top level makes him a valuable option.
